Here’s what’s new…I’m doing a ‘meet the author’ afternoon at Auburn city library on June 26th at around 3.30pm and I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO IT!!!
The book being featured is ‘The Diary of Arnmore” as the librarian there, a lovely lady named Leonie, hopes that young teens will be encouraged to read more and visit libraries more.
I really agree that kids /teens need to read more as reading enhances so many other academic areas, like spelling, vocabulary, confidence, general knowledge.
Years ago when I was a teen, I noticed that my three younger siblings watched a lot of television as soon as they got up in the morning, before they went to school. I remember being surprised the amount of time this actually wasted, so being the older sister, I told them they also had to read an hour a day. Whether a half hour in the morning and a half hour in the afternoon I didn’t mind, but they had to read…..and they did. [obedient little siblings]
My part though, was to take them to the library and help them borrow books. They loved having their own library cards.
Then, every year when I won the prize at school for literature and received gift vouchers to book stores in the city, we would make a day of catching the bus in, having lunch and then spending an hour or so choosing new books for their personal libraries.
I noticed their spelling tests at school yielded better results, so did their story-writing. Their vocabulary enhanced and so did their comprehension.
I knew then that I wanted to be a school teacher because the rewards of teaching kids were so great!!
By the time my sisters and brother were teens they had read most classic literature available to their age group and could hold a conversations about so many authors that they had read and enjoyed.
That is priceless.
I still love children’s books and I love writing them too, so come along to Auburn library on June 26th and let’s chat!!
p.s. Reading is even known to burn calories!!!!
